First United Methodist Church of Huntsville takes seriously our call to live out our faith by serving those in need. In doing so we share the good news of Jesus Christ. In the New Testament James tells us to "be doers of the word, and not merely hearers." Hands-on mission is our response to this instruction.

Local Missions

Work in the "community garden" at the Good Shepherd Mission to help grow food (and dignity) for the hungry in Huntsville.

Join a team from FUMC to work in a community garden on the grounds of Good Shepherd Mission, 1005 Avenue F.  Call 295-5441 for Rev. Willett for work dates.  All you have to bring is your gloves and a hoe, wear sunscreen and a hat, and expect to experience a blessing.

Donations are needed at the Good Shephard Mission.

Good Shepherd Mission is in need of macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, canned meats, toilet paper, and plastic grocery bags to sack up food for distribution.  Please deposit your donations in the grocery carts located at the sancturay entrances on Sunday, May 15th.  the Missions Committee will deliver them to GSM on Sunday afternoon.

VIEW PICTURES OF THE JOPIN MISSION TRIP IN JUNE 2011 FROM THE MISSION PHOTO GALLERY:

: Jerry and Alice Ellisor left Huntsville in the early hours of June 9th taking with them bbq, buns, onions, pickles, water and chips to feed 1,000 people for each of  three days  (that’s 3,000 bbq sandwiches!).  While they were in Joplin, they served out of the parking lot of Byers Avenue United Methodist Church and ministered to the victims of the recent tornado by feeding them and being listening ears to the stories the victims wanted to share.

P.S.  Some of the pictures are of folks who met at the Ellisor’s the night before they left and helped to package onions and pickles for the trip.  (From our church:  Paul and Anna Harbison, Jim Young, Jim and Ellen Willett)

**One Great Day of Service is an annual event at FUMC when members form teams and "go into the world" (actually the local neighborhoods!) and serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. Projects have included sacking beans and rice for the local food pantry, building repairs for a community church, painting at the SHSU & Wesley Foundation, filling UMCOR flood buckets, roof repair for a local service organization, yard work for a terminally ill gentleman in our community, and much, much more. Mark November 6, 2010 on your calendar, roll up your sleeves, and join us.

**School Supplies are collected and/or purchased from monetary donations each summer. Shortly before school starts each Fall, FUMC joins with other community organizations and volunteers for the sorting and assembling of the supplies into grade-level packets which are given to Walker County School Children.

**Christmas Gifts for Nursing Home Residents are received each Christmas season for residents of local nursing homes who have no family to care for them during this special season of the year. Suggested gift items for individual residents are placed on FUMC's Giving Tree during the Advent season. The wrapped gifts are delivered to the nursing homes in time for the residents to receive a gift at the nursing homes' Christmas gathering.
